Reward offered in shooting case; initial persons of interest cleared

The Butts County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $5,000 cash reward for information leading to an arrest in a shooting case.

Derrick Denson, 40, was shot and gravely wounded just before 9 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 100 block of Shoemaker Street in Jackson.

Butts County Sheriff Gary Long said the man’s nephew, a resident of the home, described the incident as a home invasion-style robbery. The nephew told authorities three men, at least two of which brandished firearms, entered the home and demanded money. The nephew told authorities he was pistol whipped, at which point the gun discharged and struck his uncle.

Denson was taken to WellStar Sylvan Grove Hospital and later to a hospital in Macon in grave condition. Long said family members do not expect him to survive his injuries.

Long said three men initially identified as persons of interest in the case — Tray Evans, Jamari Walker and Samaj Turner —presented themselves for interviews at the sheriff’s office Thursday morning and were determined not to be involved in the case.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact Sgt. Brad Hamby at 770-775-8216.
