JACKSON — Brandy Oglesby has joined the Butts County Department of Leisure Services as the new program coordinator.
A native of Newton County, Oglesby is a 2003 graduate of Newton County High School.
A mother of two sons, Oglesby first began working with children as a substitute teacher at Lamar County Elementary School. She became the computer teacher and served in that position for five years.
She then accepted a part-time position with the city of Barnesville working at their gym and civic center. Next, she joined the Lamar County Recreation Department where she worked in the office and managed the soccer program. Oglesby worked in that position managing two seasons of soccer per year for four years.
In Butts County, Oglesby will be coordinating soccer and softball. A certified referee assignor, she will also be responsible for assigning referees.
She will also be managing all of the concessions.
“The concessions here are great. You can have a full meal or snacks. We have hot dogs, cheeseburgers, chicken strips and french fries,” she said.

Department versus the school system.
“The difference is that the kids want to be here and hang out with their friends,” she said. “And, I still get to work with kids, but it’s a different atmosphere. They don’t really want to be at school, but the kids love being here.”
Oglesby said she took the position in Butts County because she saw room for advancement.
“We just went to the Georgia Recreation and Park Association conference where you take classes and get credits,” she said. “They were really good classes and you get ideas of programs to implement.”
She explains that Butts County Leisure Services is no longer your typical Recreation Department. In addition to the traditional sports programs, the department also offers camps, gymnastics and events, like the up-coming Grinch and Friends Holiday Party on Dec. 10.
Oglesby and her husband, Jason, just celebrated 19 years of marriage. They have two sons, Avery, 17, and Logan, 15.
“I worked in the school system when they were young so I could be near them and be on their schedule,” she said. “Now my oldest drives and Mom’s doing something she likes.”
