The Butts County Board of Commissioners on June 24 recognized the local ham radio group with a proclamation celebrating Amateur Radio Week June 17-23.
The Amateur Radio Club of Butts County, which counts about 35 members, had just hosted its annual Field Day event, in conjunction with the Amateur Radio Relay League, the previous weekend.
The club, and fellow ham operators all over the country, provide emergency communications services in times of disaster when other forms of communication fail. Field Day gives operators a chance to set up in a remote location under emergency power to test their equipment and communicate with other hams in the U.S. and Canada.
Elaine Stachowiak is president of the Amateur Radio Club of Butts County. Nancy Phillips is vice president.
