Community Calendar: Friends of Indian Springs meet Thursday

JHS DRAMA PRESENTATION FEB. 16, 17, 19

The students of Jackson High School will be performing “Cinderella” at the Rufus B. Adams Auditorium Feb. 16-17 at 7 p.m., and Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. The cost for adults is $5, and the cost for children 12 years old and younger is $3. FRIENDS OF INDIAN SPRINGS FEB. 16

The Friends of Indian Springs State Park invite everyone to become involved in activities to improve the park in 2012. The group will be meeting at the group shelter, 678 Lake Clark Road in Flovilla, on Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. No park pass is required to attend.

Friends of Indian Springs will work this year to reclaim Lake McIntosh as a premiere fishing destination for the area. The group’s fisheries division will be making fish friendly habitat in the water and work with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

ARBOR DAY FEB. 17

The City of Jackson, in conjunction with the Azalea and Mimosa garden clubs, will hold an Arbor Day celebration and tree planting on Friday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. The event will take place at the city property on Ga. Highway 16 at the corner of 8th Street, a location referred to as the Pep Pond. The city will plant red maples, and the garden clubs will distribute red maple seedlings to those in attendance. The public is invited.

The City of Flovilla will celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, Feb. 17 at 11:30 a.m., at Flovilla City Hall. There will be two trees planted in memory of former council members Horace Holland and Jack Heil. The public is invited to this event.

The City of Jenkinsburg will celebrate Arbor Day by planting tree behind City Hall, at 11 a.m., on Friday, Feb. 17. The public is invited.

DAUGHTERS MEETING FEB. 18

The William McIntosh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a Lunch and Learn meeting on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 11:30 a.m., at the DAR Chapter House, 222 S. Mulberry St., Jackson. The public is welcome to attend. Bring lunch and enjoy a special presentation by “Gone With The Wind” expert, Herb Bridges. GRIFFIN LIONS DANCE FEB. 18

The Griffin Lions Club is sponsoring a Mardi Gras Dance on Feb. 18 at the Event Center, 551 N. Expressway, in Griffin. There will be dancing to music by renown disc jockey Cordell Capers, a 50/50 drawing, authentic New Orleans cuisine, a costume party, autographed items by the Atlanta Braves, tickets to Fernbank Museum, Six Flags and White Water Rafting, and more. BLOOD DRIVE FEB. 20

On Feb. 20, the American Red Cross will conduct a blood drive at First Baptist Church, 1227 W. Third St., in Jackson. Hours will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Find parking and the entrance into the blood drive area on the Harkness Street side of the building.

BRIDGE LESSONS FEB. 20

The Butts County Friends of the Library is offering free contract bridge lessons on Monday evenings in February at the Butts County Library, 436 E. College Street. Pick up a flyer and sign up at the library, or call (770) 775-1696 for more information. Classes will be held from 6 p.m., to 8 p.m., on Feb. 20 and 27.

AZALEA CLUB MEETS FEB. 21

BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM FEB. 26

The Butts County branch of the NAACP will be holding its fourth annual “Saving Our Sons and Sisters Project” Feb. 26 at 3:30 p.m., at Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 709 South Mulberry St., in Jackson. The group asks for all churches participating to donate $50 toward a scholarship fund. The guest speaker will be Georgia state Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan.

PRE-K REGISTRATION MARCH 1

The Butts County school system will be holding registration for the 2012-2013 pre-kindergarten classroom located at Stark Elementary School from March 1 through March 8. There will be a lottery drawing for this classroom on March 9 at 9 a.m., at the Ernest Battle Center, 218 Woodland Way. Parents are invited to view the lottery drawing. Your child will need to be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2012 to enter pre-k.

All documents will need to be presented to the Centralized Registration Office at the Ernest Battle Professional Development Center (the former JES campus) during the registration window.

BASEBALL YARD SALE MARCH 17

The Jackson High School baseball team will be hosting a yard sale at the Exchange Club fairgrounds March 17. There will also be a “Chicken-que,” and those who wish to buy a chicken plate should see a JHS baseball player. For those interested in purchasing a booth, call Jeanette Riley at (678) 858-2007. The cost of a booth is a $20 donation.

EXCHANGE CLUB MEETINGS

40th REUNION

The 40th class reunion of the Jackson High School Class of 1972 will be held this year. Members of the reunion committee are currently in the process of notifying classmates.
