Students from third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade at Daughtry Elementary School recently gathered in the lunchroom to watch the 2012 school spelling bee. A total of 12 fourth- and fifth-grade students participated.

The winner of this year's spelling bee was Sydney Goins from Mrs. Chambers' fifth-grade class. The runner-up was Skylar Jacobs from Mrs. Thompson's fourth-grade class.

Judges were Genie Adams, Duane Kline, and Susan Mullis. School officials thanked Karmon Hatcher, Carol Cabral and the coordinator, Tracey Valentini.

The participants in the spelling bee were Maison Ackiss, Baylee Cochran, Jason Harrison, Jacob Hartman, Connor LaChappelle, Tyler Lunsford, Laurissa Tejedor, Ijore Trice, Darius White, and Trevor Word.

Students raise funds

This spring’s theme for the Daughtry Elementary book fair was “Luau.”

As an incentive to raise money for others and to create lifetime readers, Daughtry students came together and collected more than $50. In an effort to make this fundraising fun, Principal Sheila Barlow agreed to dress like a hula girl for one whole day if the students reached their goal.

Carol Cabral matched the student's donation with book fair money and was able to provide $100 of free books to McIntosh Trail. Deborah Britt, the Education, Disability, Mental Health Administrator, and Beverly Morgan, center manager, attended the book fair on Monday, Jan. 30.
