Obit: William Leonard “Billy” Singley

William Leonard “Billy” Singley, age 64, of Jackson, died Monday evening, Sept. 12, 2011 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Billy was born in Butts County March 25, 1947, son of the late Leonard Watson Singley and Dorothy Lunsford Singley. He was a 1965 graduate of Jackson High School. He was a very active member of the Stark United Methodist Church where he had served as a Trustee, member of the Pastor-Parish Relations committee, the Methodist Men’s Club and enjoyed helping with the chicken stew for the church.

He was employed as an electrician for General Motors for 30 years. He was in his own business as Singley Electric for six years. Billy went to work for Butts County as Building Inspector in 2002 and later received the coveted CBO designation (certified building official). It is held by less than 100 people in Georgia and designates the holder as a master-level building inspector holding in-depth knowledge of all elements of building construction and codes that cover construction. He later was promoted to chief building inspector and held the title of Community Services Director before his retirement. Billy loved woodworking, traveling, being with family and grandchildren, hunting and flying with his son, who is a pilot.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Riley Singley; sons and daughters-in-law, Brad and Lisa Singley, Brian and Marla Singley; grandchildren, Alex and Tyler Singley, Jack and Ginny Singley, all of Jackson; sisters, Shiela Williams of Barnesville, Jennie Burdette of Locust Grove; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Jackie Riley, of Savannah. Billy was raised by a special, loving aunt and grandmother, Nellie and Eugenia Singley.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Sept. 15 at 3 p.m., at the Stark United Methodist Church. The Rev. Frank Brock and Dr. Ed Hoard will officiate, with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and at other times at their residence. Those desiring may make a memorial donation to the building fund of Stark United Methodist Church, 1097 Halls Bridge Road, Jackson, Ga., 30233.
