Fallen probation officer identified

— A probation officer was killed Wednesday afternoon at the state prison in Jackson, in what the Department of Corrections said appeared to be an accidental shooting during a routine training exercise.

Corrections spokeswoman Kristen Stancil said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident, at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison.

The officer was identified Thursday as 24-year-old Tiffany Bishop. Stancil said Bishop had been with the department since March of this year, and worked at the Rome probation office.

“The Department extends its deepest condolences to the family of the fallen Officer during this extremely difficult time,” Stancil said in a written statement.

The Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison houses around 2,000 male offenders, and is located off Ga. Highway 36 near Interstate 75 in Butts County.
