On Friday, Jan. 21, the Jackson High School Red Devil basketball team hosted Region 4-AAA opponent Sandy Creek. Starting for the Red Devils against the Sandy Creek Patriots were Ladarian Spivey, Chez Goodrum, Marciano Allen, Dee Williams, and Ricky McMichael.
It was almost 40 seconds into the game before the first points went on the scoreboard, and those first two points were claimed by Williams for the Red Devils. Scoring bounced from one team to the other and stayed fairly even, with Spivey giving a boost to the Jackson side with one three-pointer, and with the Red Devils succeeding at five out of eight attempts at the free throw line.
The first quarter ended with the Jackson team in the lead, 18-14. Putting up points for the Red Devils in the opening quarter of play were Williams (2), Allen (1), Brandon Watson (2), LeErick Byrd (4), Spivey (5), and Jarett Watts (4).
The close contest continued through the second quarter, with the Red Devils maintaining the lead throughout the quarter and widening their lead up to nine points at times. At half time, the Red Devils led the Patriots by one basket, 34-32.
Scoring for Jackson in the second quarter were Goodrum (4), Byrd (4), Conjay Phillips (2), Spivey (4), and Williams (2). The Patriots took 12 of their 18 points during the second quarter with free throws.
The game continued at a fast pace as the Sandy Creek Patriots held a one-point lead, 49-48, at the end of the third quarter, having hit for three three-pointers during the quarter. Williams hit one three-point shot for the Red Devils, and Watson fired a second three-pointer through the net for the home team as the buzzer sounded.
Goodrum started the fourth quarter off strong, defensively, for the Red Devils with a rebound followed by a steal. Williams hit four for four foul shots early in the quarter, and Watson hit a three-pointer with 3:13 remaining on the clock to give the Red Devils a one-point lead at 56-55.
Sandy Creek managed one basket and two for two foul shots to take a 59-56 lead. With 9.2 seconds remaining, Watson pushed the ball up to the basket three times before he got the two points he wanted to cut the Patriots' lead to 59-58. But that is where the game ended, one basket short of a win for the Jackson Red Devils.
The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots defeated the Lady Devils, 61-18. The Red Devils and Lady Devils next play on Friday, Jan. 28, at home against Spalding.
